August 24, 2005University of Denver men's basketball player, Yemi Nicholson (Aurora, Colo.) will be contributing journals throughout the summer, giving viewpoints on the team, games, his summer and the 2004 - 2005 season. Nicholson is a 6-foot-10-inch, 260-pound center from Aurora, Colo. Nicholson began his basketball career at Fort Lewis College but saw limited time during his freshman year. During his first season with Denver, Nicholson played in 25 games. He was first on the Pioneers' shot block chart with 30, he made 50.6 percent (78-of-154) of his shots, making him the most accurate Pioneer, and was third on the team with 107 rebounds (4.3 per game). During the 2004 - 2005 season he averaged 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks a game.JOURNAL #1Basketball season is really not that far away and will be here very soon. In this little time that we have off in the summer, I plan on working harder than I ever have before to become the best player possible. We had a good season during 2004 - 2005 but we can even do better next year, especially if we all work hard during the off season. We have a new recruiting class coming in next season who should be a big help for our team. I have not seen some of them play, but from what I have heard, from them being on our team next year, we have a better chance of winning some games. If they have the same desire to play basketball and win as everybody on the team now, I feel that we can not lose a game during the regular season. We already have the players to do it now, but if we can get some more good players to help us achieve our goal, we would be unstoppable.I am really looking forward to the upcoming season. I am going to be a senior next year so this is my last go around. I think our team is going to be very successful this year, if we all stay healthy and hungry. Our team goal is to win a conference championship again and play in the NCAA tournament.JOURNAL #2This summer has already been going as planned. People on the team are working hard to improve our chances of having a great season next year. Even though not all of my teammates are here in Denver we are all staying in touch and keeping each other up to date on how our summers are going. Everyone has been working extremely hard, including me. If all of this hard work continues, our goal will be a lot easier to reach. Our team is not only lifting weights and shooting around in the gym. Summer leagues around the country have begun and most of our team is playing one. These summer leagues really can improve someone's game because players are forced to play against all different types of people with different styles of playing. When we are all here in Denver during the school year, we play against each other almost every day. When we are given the opportunity to play someone different, we are able to try new moves that we developed and see if they are effective.I am playing in John Bailey's Denver Pro-Am league. This is the best summer league in Denver with the best competition for me. It has big men that are competitive and skilled. This forces me to work hard while playing games and while doing this I am getting my game better. This league includes players from, Air Force, the University of Colorado, and pros. By me playing with these types of players I can only get better and will make sure that I continue to get better throughout the short off season we have.JOURNAL #3This week was a lot of fun. Our basketball program had a basketball camp for kids between the ages of 6 and 18. I was not the only player on the Pioneer basketball team to be a counselor. Terrence Gordon and Brian Brown were also apart of the camp doing a great job with the youngest age group of the camp. I have a lot of fun working with kids. The age group that I was working with was nine to 11. These kids had so much energy it was amazing. They were always ready to go from one drill to the next, and were always anxious for their turn to play. Even though the camp was fun for me and the kids, it was still very informative and I feel that the kids left the camp knowing a lot more about basketball than they did when they started the camp. The campers really enjoyed themselves. During the camp there were all sorts of games and competitions for them to be apart of. They all had the chance to use what the coaches taught them and use that new understanding into the games and competitions that they played. At the end of the camp the coaches tallied up all of the campers' scores and had an award ceremony for the winners to get all sorts of cool things like posters, trophies, certificates and basketballs.Since the camp took all day we were all tired. This did not stop us from trying to fulfill our goal that we have set ourselves for this summer. We all still worked out and played in our summer league games. This was good to see our team doing because it shows the enthusiasm and dedication that my teammates have for basketball and making it clear to see that they want to be better ball players.JOURNAL #4Last week I was in Atlanta, Ga. playing in the adidas Superstar Camp. This camp brings together the top thirty NCAA basketball players to workout with some of the top coaches in the NBA. The great instruction that I was given from the NBA coaches that were there, along with playing with the type of players I was playing with definitely got my game to a new level. Since all of the right people were there for me to be working out with I took full advantage of that. Since the players and coaches in the camp were some of the best in the country, my days felt really long and tiring. We were having three practices a day and they were all tough but made us all better basketball players.During the adidas Superstar Camp the college players were also required to work with the high school All-American's. This was fun to do because it is amazing to see how good these sixteen and seventeen year old students were. They were very competitive and that is what made it fun to work with them because they were all hard workers. I met a lot of good basketball players while I was there and plan on watching them improve during the 2005-2006 basketball season.JOURNAL #5I am in Denver helping Chauncey Billups with his youth basketball camp that he is running. There were more University of Denver basketball players that were apart of the camp. Joe Jackson who will be a sophomore this coming season, and Rodney Billups who was our starting point guard last year and graduated at the end of the school year were also counselors. It was a lot of fun working with the campers along side a couple of my teammates. The camp turned out very well with about 250 kids showing up. It was hard to keep all 250 kids under control but we all got the job done. The age groups were from five to 14 years old and they were all having a good time playing basketball and learning the game. It is good to see young people like that already practicing and playing the game. I would like to see how much better they become since they have started playing at such a young age.I have still been keeping contact with my teammates at the University of Denver and they are all working hard also so that we can be a really good team next year. It is good to see everyone working hard because it shows how dedicated every one is to the team and how much desire we all have for us to have a successful and fun season.JOURNAL #6I have returned to Denver for the 2005-2006 school year. I had a very productive summer training and working out at several different basketball camps. Playing with good players and working out with good trainers have definitely helped me improve my game. I am very excited for the basketball season so that I can see the improvements that I have made from the summer to November, when our team plays our first game of the season. It is good to see the team back. Everyone had a good summer and is anxious for the basketball season to start. All of my teammates were working hard over the summer to make sure that we have a good season this year. The hard work is easily seen in the change of their bodies and in skills when we have our open runs in Hamilton Gymnasium. There are a few new faces on the team that I still have not had the chance to see. I am looking forward to seeing them play so we know what they will bring to our team. We have two freshmen on our team and I feel they will be a huge addition to our team. They look like people who will play hard for us both in practice, and on the game floor.Print Friendly Version var obj = "start":0,"count":10,"name":"story-template-boilerplate","sport_id":null,"count_breakpoints":null,"css_class":"","pinned_id":"","extra":,"context":null,"dummy":false,"type":"ads","id":"50a8281f-7baf-444f-ab5d-80d5903df43e","data":"location":"id":0,"title":null,"type":null,"effect":null,"fixed_image_sizes":false,"excluded_sport_ids":null,"slick":false,"dfp":false,"sidearm_dfp":false,"common_page":false,"html_template":null,"name":null,"autoplay_speed":0,"accessibility_icons":false,"sizes":null,"slick_options":null,"dfp_sizes":null,"campaigns":[],"content_id":null,"content_title":null,"content_date":null,"content_url":null,"content_image_url":null,"mode":"web"; if (!("sidearmComponents" in window)) window.sidearmComponents = []; window.sidearmComponents.push(obj); Related Story Content var obj = "start":0,"count":10,"name":"story-template-general-1-1","sport_id":null,"count_breakpoints":null,"css_class":"","pinned_id":"","extra":,"context":null,"dummy":false,"type":"ads","id":"20c28f64-99c4-48e0-8d7f-fbfde0069f9a","data":"location":"id":0,"title":null,"type":null,"effect":null,"fixed_image_sizes":false,"excluded_sport_ids":null,"slick":false,"dfp":false,"sidearm_dfp":false,"common_page":false,"html_template":null,"name":null,"autoplay_speed":0,"accessibility_icons":false,"sizes":null,"slick_options":null,"dfp_sizes":null,"campaigns":[],"content_id":null,"content_title":null,"content_date":null,"content_url":null,"content_image_url":null,"mode":"web"; if (!("sidearmComponents" in window)) window.sidearmComponents = []; window.sidearmComponents.push(obj); Story Links Related Videos Now Playing: Play Video
